December 8, 2010: WWAJD About Illegal Immigration?

The U.S. Supreme Court is going to decide if Arizona’s law against illegal immigration is unconstitutional.  The state law before the court punishes any employer, and could drive the employer out of business, if the employer gets caught twice knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.  But the constitution gives power to regulate immigration exclusively to the federal government, not the states, so opponents claim the law violates the constitution.

So, What Would American Jesus Do?
The Old Testament says we are to be kind to the "alien" living among us (Exodus 22:21, Deuteronomy 10:17).  But does that compel us to give our tax dollars, welfare funds, or desirable jobs to illegal aliens?  If an alien has broken the law of our nation by coming illegally, the alien is supposed to be subject to the penalties of the law just like the native citizens.  Jesus said, “He who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep." (John 10:1-2).

Those who entered our land legally and with permission, like the Pilgrims, are the kinds of immigrants on which this great country was based.  But American Jesus would want illegal immigrants, like thieves and robbers, to be put in jail and punished.  Anyone who aids them in committing their crime, like employers who give them jobs that Americans want, should also be punished.
