December 16, 2010: WWAJD About Voting on the START Treaty Before Christmas?

The current lame-duck Senate controlled by Democrats is trying to ratify the START Treaty with Russia.  This treaty extends our two nation’s prior agreements to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons, so that the world doesn’t get destroyed in a nuclear war.
But Senator Jim DeMint from South Carolina opposes voting on the treaty now, right before Christmas.  He said, “We shouldn’t be jamming a major arms control treaty up against Christmas; it’s sacrilegious and disrespectful.  What's going on here is just wrong. This is the most sacred holiday for Christians. They did the same thing last year - they kept everybody here until [Christmas Eve] to force something down everybody's throat. I think Americans are sick of this." Senate Minority Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) agrees with him, because the current schedule for voting is impossible to accomplish “without disrespecting one of the two holiest of holidays for Christians.”

So, What Would American Jesus Do About Voting on the START Treaty Before Christmas?

These two gentlemen are clearly correct.  In Jesus’ time it was unlawful to work on religious holy days.  (John 5:16-18)  It would be very disrespectful of Jesus to try to ram through a peace treaty so close to his birthday.  American Jesus would not want any public official to ruin his Christmas vacation by working on a treaty to promote peace between two of the most powerful nations on earth, with a long history of animosity between them.  Don’t get me wrong -- I’m not saying, and neither are Senators DeMint or Kyl, that the Senate should not eventually approve the START Treaty.  What they are saying is that they should not have to do it so close to the Christmas holiday, which must be held sacred by politicians because we are a Christian nation.

Like Senator DeMint, as an American I am “sick and tired” of being distracted by the pressures of my job so close to Christmas.  No one should be diverted from celebrating Jesus birthday with their families and friends by laboring so close to Christmas.  Congress should pass a law prohibiting anyone from having to work before Christmas.  That way the Senators could go home and not have to worry at all about passing lame-duck legislation so close to Christmas.
