December 1, 2010: WWAJD About Tax Cuts?

There is great debate today about what to do with the Bush-era tax cuts, including those available to wealthy people who make over $250,000 per year.  .

So What Would American Jesus Do?

I think American Jesus would pay his taxes, and not complain.  Jesus had no hesitation in “giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s.” (Matthew 22:15-22)   Also, “because the authorities that exist have been established by God,” (Romans 13:1-7), whatever Congress says we owe as a tax is God’s decree, and so must be obeyed.

Interestingly, I think Jesus would also pay taxes owed by others, too.  He found and provided the drachmas to pay Peter’s temple tax, as well as his own.  (Matthew 17:24-27)

So Jesus would probably be opposed to tax cuts.  People should pay whatever taxes are necessary to run the government.  And if you have enough money to pay someone else’s tax – like Peter’s – you should do that as well.
